It has been a long road with Dirk. He came from a not so very happy place. In the beginning we lived in Toronto and I don't think he really liked that, but when we moved to Guelph, he finally started playing with toys and having some fun. He was always a little sketchy and unpredictable, not really good traits in a dog. He loved his big brother Jake and I am glad they had that friendship. We have had a rough go with him... He has snipped at people and he doesn't really trust anyone. We have had good times too! He loves camping, barking and swimming. He would swim across Lake Ontario if we allowed him to.
He is turning 16 this May and he won't be seeing his birthday. Dirk is deaf and blind and can no longer walk up stairs and has a tough time simply walking. This is the reason why I stated in the past that I did not want to get another dog, you have to make that decision.. When is the best time? There is no best time. With our first dog Jake, we watched him get sicker and sicker and we dragged it on for too long. Dirk has been deteriorating for quite some time and now is the time. He will be leaving us today, which also happens to be his big brother' birthday. I hope he finds some happiness and some little doggies to play with. So now it is time for goodbye. I'm sorry.
