Newborn Photography Q&A
February 27, 2025I thought this might be a good time to go over some things that people have asked me or I have learned over the years regarding newborn photography. I remember when I first started with newborns, I was terrified. I also didn’t know what I was doing. I took online courses on posing, lighting and safety, and with some practice, I started to get the hang of it. Of course, there are always challenges with babies. Gas, skin irritation, hunger, feeding problems, not wanting to be put down, recovering from childbirth, etc. The list goes on and on. Let’s go straight into some of the things that are important when it comes to photographing newborns.
I am located in Guelph, ON. I also travel to the surrounding areas for in-home sessions.
Newborns tend to be hungrier or want to feed more when they are in my studio. It could be for comfort, or it could be they are cluster feeding. Regardless, being prepared to feed them more than usual is helpful.
I am not a stickler when it comes to the 1-2 week time period to get that “newborn” feel. Babies are newborns for longer than that period. I have successfully photographed 1 month old babies for their newborn sessions. Although earlier is better, but I am fully aware that life happens, and I (the photographer), may not be your priority.
If you are coming to my studio, I have all the props, outfits, and wraps that I will need for your session. You are not required to bring anything, but yourself, your newborn, and a diaper bag.
When I come to your home for your newborn session, I will use the main bedroom, and whichever room has the best light. I use 100% natural light for most sessions, so windows are a necessity.
Newborn sessions are either booked in advance or last minute. There is no right way of going about booking a newborn session.
